The increasing concerns about sustainability within construction are reflected in this week’s Ecobuild and an increasing number of other exhibitions and publications. As manufacturer of a proven environmentally friendly product- clay drainage, with its natural raw material, low embodied energy, unrivalled durability etc- I keep waiting for the backlash against the environmentally damaging material of pvc. It has been a long time coming; as long ago as 1996, Greenpeace produced a publication “Building the Future- a guide to building without PVC” which warned of the environmental risks of PVCu: “the production, use and disposal of PVC results in the creation and release of large amounts of toxic chemicals”. Surely taking a keener interest in sewer pipe materials is as valid a way of protecting the environment as swarming around insulation and PV panels?
