PASSIVE SKIMMERS

The Passive Skimmer is designed to absorb and encapsulate hydrocarbons by floating directly on the water in catch basins, sumps, oil/water separators and marine fueling stations. Passive Skimmers are made of a proprietary blend of polymers, called Smart Sponge®, packaged in flexible mesh containers and are available in a variety of sizes.

More effective maintenance, less costs

Interceptor Enhancers feature the Smart Sponge® technology and can be inserted into oil separators to dramatically reduce maintenance costs, whilst increasing effectiveness and producing a recyclable solid waste.

And the use of Interceptor Enhancers has shown dramatic results.

Based on the current Smart Sponge® Passive Skimmer these products are installed within existing interceptors/separators (OWIs) to dramatically increase the effectiveness of the OWI (from typically 45% removal to 95% removal) whilst at the same time reducing annual maintenance costs by up to 64%.

The role of Smart Sponge®

The Smart Sponge® absorbs the hydrocarbon contamination and locks it into the molecular structure of the polymer transferring the hydrocarbons into a solid waste suitable for either controlled disposal or for use as an alternative fuel. This unique ability means that instead of disposing of tonnes of contaminated liquid waste it is now possible to reduce this dramatically to a few kilograms of solid waste.

Which means dramatic savings in costs and huge environmental benefits.

What normally happens with existing interceptors…

Traditionally, maintenance of an OWI would consist of a tanker with a two-man gang extracting the whole volume of the OWI. In the case of even a medium sized OWI this could amount to 110,000 litres or 110 tonnes. This would take many trips, and involve considerable disposal costs of the contaminated waste. The tanker would then have to re-charge the OWI to bring it back to operating condition.

What can happen with Interceptor Enhancers…

Smart Sponge® Interceptor Enhancers would transform the 110 tonnes of liquid waste into just 145kg of solid waste (based on average contamination levels) and the maintenance procedure becomes just a two-man job with a van. The cost and environmental benefits of this new system are considerable, particularly when many such OWIs can be serviced in a typical day.

In recent tests carried out on a ‘typical’ MOD facility it was shown what could be achieved:

  • A 64% saving in maintenance costs
  • A 99% saving in the volume of environmental waste

And this 1% of remaining waste can still be used as an alternative fuel as part of the Waste for Energy initiative. So a truly closed-loop system of maintenance is created, where everyone benefits.
